Getting Hospice Care Started

If you or a loved one is dealing with serious illness, it’s important to talk with someone about whether hospice is an appropriate option. A referral from a doctor is necessary to be admitted, but anyone—a patient, family member, caregiver, or friend—can make an inquiry about hospice care. A phone call to Lumina Hospice & Palliative Care is all that is needed to begin the process.

Choosing hospice does not mean giving up hope. In fact, we believe that end-of-life care is an empowering choice that a patient and their family makes when hope has shifted from pursuit of a remedy, to a desire for dignity, comfort, and quality of life. Our hospice teams assist the family and patient to prepare for the end of life, and whatever hopes and desires a patient expresses, we are here to help. Hospice supports your choice to live the rest of your life as fully and comfortably as possible, with practical, social, and emotional support for yourself and your loved ones.

When you make a call to Lumina Hospice & Palliative Care, our response is prompt. We’ll answer questions, schedule an informational interview, help determine whether hospice care is appropriate, and even contact the patient’s doctor if hospice care hasn’t already been discussed. Within a day or two, and on the same day if needs are immediate, a nurse or social worker will meet with the patient to address their specific needs.

The earlier this phone call is made in the end-of-life process, the more beneficial hospice care can be. Contacting Lumina Hospice & Palliative Care early gives us more time to determine eligibility, understand each patient’s unique situation, establish trusting relationships, set goals, adjust medication, and ensure that the patient and family are as well cared-for as possible.

Medicare and most insurance cover hospice care. Because of generous contributions from our community, Lumina Hospice & Palliative Care is able to provide care for people without insurance or financial means. No one is turned away because of inability to pay.
