For Caregivers

Caring for a family member or friend through a chronic or terminal illness is an act of loyalty, love, and devotion. It can also be one of the most challenging tasks you will ever face. We believe that it is important to provide resources and support to family caregivers; for the caregivers of our patients, as well as other caregivers in the communities we serve regardless of hospice participation.

Caregivers are those who provide support for another person who needs help. Caring for a family member or friend is not easy no matter how many hours a week you provide care. The life of the person you are caring for has likely changed dramatically, but so has yours. That is why we feel it is important to provide resources for family caregivers in the communities we serve. The person you are caring for need not be on hospice care for you to use our services.

Caregiver Connections

Caregiving for a loved one can be both an overwhelming and isolating experience.  Our monthly support groups are offered to all family caregivers in our community regardless of type of illness or prognosis. The purpose is to provide a format for sharing common experiences and for supporting one another along the difficult path of caregiving. The group is open to the community and is free of charge. Drop-ins are welcome, no pre-registration is required. Click here for dates and details.

Powerful Tools for Caregivers

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a six-week educational series designed to provide caregivers the tools they need to take care of themselves while caring for an older relative or friend whether you are helping a parent, spouse or friend who lives at home, in a nursing home or across the country.

This program helps family caregivers reduce stress, improve self-confidence, communicate feelings more clearly, balance their lives, increase their ability to make tough decisions and locate helpful resources. Classes consist of six sessions held once a week. Participants will receive a book, The Caregiver Helpbook, developed specifically for the class. Lumina can also help you find care for your loved one so you can attend the class.

This class does not focus on specific diseases or hands-on care giving for the care receiver, and is not designed for professional caregivers. The class is open to all family caregivers in the community whether your loved one is in hospice care or not.

The class location rotates throughout the year between Corvallis, Lebanon, Philomath and Albany. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Click here for the dates and locations of upcoming classes or simply call Lumina at 541.757.9616 for more information or to register.

Transitions

Transitions is a free community program from Lumina designed to help individuals and families live well with a serious, life-limiting illness. Transitions is for those who are either not ready for, or not appropriate for, hospice care. Click here for more information about Transitions.
